With all of the turmoil in the world these days, I’m getting really picky about the entertainment I choose to consume. I’ve been making a conscious effort to seek out movies and TV that are uplifting and spiritually nourishing rather than filled with gratuitous violence or negative messages. Luckily, there has been renewed interest in that kind of quality entertainment by more people than just me and the industry has responded by providing some high-quality movies and TV shows to choose from. Southern Gospel is one of them! You won’t want to miss this powerful story of redemption that opens today, March 10th.
Disclosure: I was provided media advanced access to screen the film by BMG to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own.
Who stars in Southern Gospel?
Southern Gospel has some very recognizable faces in it. It stars four-time Emmy nominee Max Ehrich, Katelyn Nacon (The Walking Dead), Emma Myers (Netflix’s Wednesday) and J. Alphonse Nicholson (P. Valley and Just Mercy)!
What is the plot of Southern Gospel?
Samuel Allen, a 1960’s rockstar, finds himself in jail after struggling with years of anger and blame toward organized religion that has led him down a road of rebellion. In a moment of divine intervention, the judge dismisses drug charges against him under the pretense that Samuel speaks to local schools and churches about the dangers of drugs. Given a second chance, he follows in his father’s footsteps to become a preacher, overcoming the influence of a powerful church leader with a personal vendetta against his family.
SOUTHERN GOSPEL is the story of a man overcoming brokenness and never surrendering the dream on his journey to find the gospel… Southern Gospel.
Is Southern Gospel a family film?
While Southern Gospel is a faith-based film about redemption, it is rated PG-13 for some mature thematic content such as drug use, suicide, language and some violence. None of it graphic in my opinion, and it is all essential to tell the full story. You know your children best, so you can make the best call if this is an appropriate movie for them to see.
What did I think of Southern Gospel?
I really enjoyed Southern Gospel. The 108 minute movie grabbed my attention right from the beginning and held it through the whole film. I found the acting to be excellent and definitely on par with any other movie you might see in the theater. I absolutely loved the music in the movie and found myself Googling to see if there was a soundtrack available to purchase. I recommend the movie and will personally be grabbing the DVD once it is released on video.
