Halloween is just around the corner! If you are looking for a fun Halloween craft you can create that will also serve as a pretty cool looking decoration, you need to check out this easy to make Halloween DIY lantern! I’ve provided affiliate links to some of the supplies you will need to make this unique Halloween craft.
Here is what you will need to gather before you get started:
- Cardstock paper – Black or any dark shades
- Colored craft paper – colors of your choice
- Pencil or pen – for tracing the design
- X-ACTO knife
- Scissors
- Craft glue
- LED Candle or light
Step 1:
Decide the size for the lantern and cut the cardstock paper according to it. The lamp we’re making is triangular, meaning it has 3 sides. I prepared an 8 inches x 12.5 inches cardstock paper; The base of the lantern will be made by folding the 12 inch into even thirds and keeping 0.5 inch extra for attaching the side.
Step 2:
Print out the pattern from the given templates or you can also create your own design for the lantern. Use a pencil to trace the pattern on the middle part of the even thirds. (Click on each template to get a printable copy.)
Step 3:
Use an X-ACTO knife to cut out the patterns. Kids working on this project should be under adult supervision for this step.
Step 4:
Cut out the white parts of the patterns (from the given template).
Step 5:
Select a shade for the lantern and choose that colored craft paper. Cut out the craft paper to cover the whole silhouette pattern.
Step 6:
Apply glue on the black parts of the silhouette image and then place the craft paper on the glued area. Make sure that the paper is glued properly.
Step 7:
Now fold the lantern base and apply glue along the extra 0.5 inch of the cardstock. Bring the other open side of the cardstock paper and join it with the glued part. Allow the glue to dry.
Place an LED candle inside a glass and then place the lantern over the glass. Or you can skip the glass and just place inside the lantern.

I made something similar for our outside light! Each year I slide it around the glass and it makes the whole neighborhood glow orange!

My son will enjoy making these this weekend, and the years to come. I especially like cutting activities because they help develop his fine motor skills.
