Have you ever wanted to make Hawaiian Shaved Ice at home? I know I have! The season where it is available always seems so short in Wisconsin. My go-to place to indulge in some sweet and tasty shaved ice has always been Summerfest. (For some reason the ethnic festivals don’t offer it – just snow cones.) I’ve never been able to recreate the soft, fluffy snow-like shaved ice until now.
I was sent a Hawaiian Shaved Ice machine and some syrups to try from my sponsor, Hawaiian Shaved Ice. I’ll admit I was a tiny bit skeptical even though I had heard so many rave reviews. I mean, I had tried other snow cone machines in the past but they never produced that soft snow I love. I’m not even going to tell you how much wear and tear I put on my blender trying to satisfy my cravings!! But shaved ice is NOT the same thing as a snow cone, which tends to be more crushed ice. Nothing wrong with that – just not what I was looking for.
When I received my Hawaiian Shaved Ice machine, I realized what the difference is. It’s pretty basic and self-explanatory once you think about it: shaved ice is, well, shaved. Like with a razor. Lightbulb moment over here!! So the machine does actually have a razor blade in it. You will want to keep that in mind when handling it or allowing your children to use it.
It’s super easy to make. The machine comes with five ice molds that you fill 3/4 full (because water expands when it freezes) and pop into the freezer. When they are frozen, pop out the hockey-puck-looking ice, let it sit for 5 minutes for extra fluffy snow, and place into the machine. The hard part is now done – I kid, it’s not hard at all! The machine takes it from there and you get to plan what you will do with your shaved ice.
I’ve always enjoyed shaved ice as a typical frozen treat the way they serve it at the festivals with flavored syrup poured over the top. It’s still absolutely delicious that way! But once I had the ability to make it at home, I started looking at what else I could do with it. Here are a few ideas:
Pour sweetened condensed milk over it. This is actually a traditional way to enjoy shaved ice. If you want a real twist, pour BOTH flavored syrup AND condensed milk on top. Talk about a tasty and creamy treat!!
Add flavored shaved ice as a topping to your favorite ice cream flavor. Double the cool treat!!
Add shaved ice to your favorite soda in place of ice cubes.
Add shaved ice to your favorite cocktail in place of ice cubes. This works particularly well with drinks that can be served on the rocks or frozen like margaritas!
Use shaved ice as a bed on which to serve foods that need to stay cold like shrimp or seafood.
So now that you’ve seen all the fun things you can do with shaved ice and how easy it is to make, you probably want to know how you can get a shaved ice machine in your home as well. And to make the deal even sweeter, you can use the code “Maureen” when you purchase your own shaved ice machine here to save 10% off one purchase.* The code is good through the remainder of 2022, but you can only use it once so make sure to grab a couple for gifts too! You can use it on your whole purchase, so be sure to stock up on Hawaiian Shaved Ice syrups as well or grab a package that includes the machine, syrups and more!
*Excludes the Hatsuyuki Cube Ice Shaver, the Sno-King Snow Cone Machine, and the Little Snowie
