Sargento Makes Healthy Snacking Easier (and banishes the moldy blue thing in my fridge drawer)

LJ has been a huge cheese lover since, well, birth I guess.  I have vivid memories of him as a baby, screaming all the way through the grocery store, and then stopping once we got to the dairy aisle.  He would turn into an absolute charmer, flash that dimpled grin and ask “heese???” (He had a hard time saying the “ch” blend!)  Hand the boy a stick of string cheese or a slice of American and he was your friend for life.

Believe me, I’m NOT complaining!  Cheese is a great choice for a healthy snack.  Put it together with one of his other favorite foods – fruit – and you practically have a meal.  Jay and I could probably learn a few things from LJ.  Like nearly 75% of adults (according to a study by Sargento), Jay and I tend to gravitate toward less healthy snack choices.

Sargento also learned that where healthy snacks are placed in the fridge matters.“It’s clear that people tend to make food choices based on what they first see in their refrigerator. The new Sargento Fridge Pack puts wholesome, natural snacks easily within reach to encourage healthier snacking, “says Sargento spokesperson Liz Ward, MS, RD. “Healthy habits start with a clean and organized refrigerator, making the Sargento Fridge Pack an easy way to start making better snacking decisions.”  We are using this principle to help shape our snacking habits by taking the fruit and veggies out of the crisper drawer and placing them at eye level as well.

Sargento used this information to help develop the Fridge Pack.  This nifty package allows you to put the healthy cheese snack front and center in your fridge.  Placing it right at eye level rather than stuck in some drawer encourages everyone who opens the fridge to reach for a good snack choice.  The Sargento Fridge Pack is available in three popular Sargento natural cheese varieties: Light String Cheese, Colby-Jack Cheese and Mild Cheddar Cheese. And like all Sargento cheese snacks, these are 100% natural, never processed and is Wisconsin based!

Here are some additional healthy snacking tips from Sargento:

·         Refresh your snacking habits. The annual spring cleaning ritual can also pertain to your snacking habits. While you’re spring cleaning your kitchen this year, transform your snacking routine, too. Keep healthy choices front and center to make smart snacking a cinch.  Fill a bowl with fresh whole fruit and set it on the counter, keep whole grain crackers and rolls in your desk or purse, and place a Sargento Fridge Pack in an easy-to-reach place in your fridge.

·         Pack portable snacks. When the clock strikes 3:00 p.m., we know you’re looking for a snack to tide you over. Take food with you to munch on when you’re at work or on the road to prevent unexpected trips to the vending machine or drive through.

·         Turn over a new snacking leaf. Chips, cookies and candy can often wreak havoc on our diets. Stock up on nutrient-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, eggs and cheese to obtain that necessary boost in energy.

·         Pay attention to portions. American portion sizes continue to increase everywhere we go and, consequently, so do our waistlines. Healthy snacks should fit into your calorie budget, not be additions that you don’t account for. Aim for 100 to 200 calories per snack, and count snack calories as part of your daily energy allowance to avoid this common mistake.

·         Protein + fiber = The best snacks. We know it can be a challenge to find satisfying snacks that are both nutritious and pack a punch of flavor.  Try pairing foods with protein, such as eggs, cheese and nuts, with fiber-filled fare, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Foods rich in protein and fiber help you to feel fuller for longer, and they pack other vital nutrients to support good health.

On a side note: Another (unadvertised) advantage of using the Sargento Fridge Pack is not having any more fuzzy blue mystery sticks showing up in my fridge.  We used to keep the string cheese in that little drawer in the fridge.  Inevitably, one piece would migrate away from the group and wind up buried at the bottom for a while some time a reeeeeaallly long time.  It would be pretty nasty by the time it was found.  With the fridge pack, that doesn’t happen.  All of the cheese sticks stay in one place with no prison breaks.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour with Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Sargento.  I was compensated for my time and effort.  All opinions expressed are my own and not influenced by any compensation.

Protein and fiber definitely a good mix for snacks. How bout prunes? Those have fiber, right? But protein, not sure about.

Anthony – Prunes are always a good snack too. Not very high on the protein, but they can take care of any *ahem* ISSUES that might arise from eating too much cheese, if-you-know-what-I-mean.
