One of our favorite family activities is going to the movies together. Now that LJ is 9 (almost 10 – how did THAT happen??) we have a bigger selection of movies to choose from. One that we are really looking forward to seeing when it opens in September is The Boxtrolls, a stop-motion animated movie brought to you by Laika, the studio behind Coraline and ParaNorman.
Ever since seeing Gremlins as a kid myself, I loved the idea of there being cute, at least somewhat friendly creatures in hiding that not everyone knows about. The Boxtrolls are a similar creature, although they don’t get nasty if they get wet or eat after midnight! Boxtrolls are cute (albeit somewhat dirty) creatures that live underground and hide from humans by retreating into the boxes they wear as clothes. One human boy played by Isaac Hempstead Wright, best known as the paralyzed Bran Stark on Game of Thrones lives among them and goes by the name “Eggs” as that is what his box says.
When a vilian threatens the world of the Boxtrolls, Eggs must reenter the human world to help save his Boxtroll community. He befriends Winnie who is played by Elle Fanning who is currently being seen as Sleeping Beauty in Maleficient. Winnie helps Eggs pass in the human world in and some pretty funny misunderstandings result.
These kinds of “don’t judge a book by its cover” stories always hit a home run with me and I’m looking forward to sharing more about The Boxtrolls with you as we get closer to its release. For now, please enjoy a sneak peek via this trailer and don’t forget to mark down its opening date (9/26/14) on your family calendar.

I’m thrilled to be partnering with SocialMoms and Focus Features. While I am being compensated for my time and effort, all opinions expressed remain my own.
