More than just the Fonz…

Milwaukee was lucky enough to have quite a few celebrities around today. We had members of the casts of both Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley visiting on this momentous occasion.See, today was the unveiling of the "Bronz Fonz".As many of you know, Milwaukee was the setting of the popular TV show, Happy Days. To celebrate this part of our notoriety history, a bronze statue of Henry Winkler (aka ...

Is It A Generation Gap?

So I spent today in new teacher professional development meetings. Basically, it's the day that all teachers who are new to our district come and have numerous presentations by most of the administrators who are above them. There are also presentations on different district goals such as assessment and differentiation. It is nobody's idea of a fun way to spend the day. Even those of us who are ...

It’s Coming…

Even though the calender still reads "August" and the air conditioner is still humming away, there is a not-so-faint drumbeat that can be heard in the distance. Summer is coming to a close and "Back to School" is the new headline on every store circular that lands on our doorstep. Fall is almost here and those big yellow school buses will be rounding the bend shortly. We had Little J's "Meet ...

Tummy Troubles

I swear that if you go to the doctor when you are not sick, you inevitably pick up some bug while you are there. Last week, Little J went in for his four year old check-up. He got a great report. At 43 3/4 inches and 41 lbs, he is officially growing like a weed. Everything else looked great including sinuses and ears, his two usual trouble spots. Saturday, Big J, Little J and his Pop-pop set off ...

A little setback.

So you know how you always hear that disclaimer "Check with your physician before starting any new exercise program"? Did you always ignore it figuring it was for old people on the verge of dropping dead from a heart attack? I did. Turns out it's not bad advice. Your physician might just talk you out of doing something stupid and injuring yourself. You know, like going from a very moderate ...

It’s a Whole New World…

I think any of us over the age of 30 can grasp pretty fully how much computers and the Internet have changed our lives.I remember being in grade school and going to work with my mom who was a computer systems analyst. I visited a room with her that served as the building's computer hard drive. Yes, a whole room! Her "take home" computer was the size of my largest piece of luggage. My first ...

You know better than that!!

The other day Little J and I were driving home from the store when we passed a little boy (maybe about 8) sitting on the side of the road with his bike. He was trying to wave down cars as they passed, but no one was stopping. He was visibly upset and I thought he might have been hurt. Since Little J often gets a scrape or cut when we go to the park, I always carry a first-aid kit and ...
