I’ve loved music ever since I was a little kid. For me, music plays as big a part in many of my memories as the sights and smells I experienced. My husband loves listening to 80’s music and I can just about name the year for each song that comes on and tell you what I was doing when that song was popular. Because of this, I’m always on the hunt for music that will create the mood and memories that I will actually WANT to remember over and over.
When I first played David Gray’s Mutineers, I loved the mood behind the music. Even if you aren’t really familiar with David Gray, I’ll bet you have heard his hit from a few years ago “Babylon”. This album has the same sort of feel to it, even though Gray says he went about writing it in a completely different way. I feel like it has a sophistication that can be missing in so much of the music out there today. The lyrics are thoughtful and definitely spoke to me as I went through the different songs.
Listening to Mutineers, I pictured my life as a TV show and the album as that soundtrack music that plays as you watch the characters go about their activities. It wasn’t intrusive and had a nice upbeat feel without making me antsy. One of my favorite tracks (although I loved all of them) is “Back in the World Again”, the first track on the album. I love the way Gray’s voice is layered throughout the song. Another favorite, “Last Summer” has an absolutely haunting string solo that had me turning the volume up as far as it would go.
Mutineers was released on June 17th, and is available both or here on Amazon.com
You can catch David Gray live on tour this summer. (I’m so sad he isn’t visiting Milwaukee on his tour!)
