Our Budget Bathroom Makeover

It’s hard to believe but we’ve been in our house for over 15 years now. That’s actually the longest I’ve ever lived in one home! Our house was built in the mid-90’s, so a lot of it was already ready for an update when we moved in. Almost immediately we replaced the white linoleum floor, painted the walls in every room (except the laundry room) and painted a lot of the golden oak trim white. We replaced the hollow builder doors with six panel ones and Jay did a lot of work on the lower level as well.

The home improvements slowed down a lot once Josh was born. We did replace the vanity, light fixture and hardware in the guest bath, but never really worked on our master bath other than to paint it and put up new towel bars and a new toilet. (That last one was more out of necessity than a desire for style! After having clogging issues with our previous low flow toilet, we replaced it with this one. I never thought I would rave about a toilet, but this one is awesome!!)

We’ve still got a lot of improvement projects that need to get done – replacing the windows is on the top of the list. I also feel like a kitchen renovation takes precedence over the master bath since everyone sees the kitchen. That’s why I was so excited when Lowe’s offered the opportunity to partner with them on this sponsored post and give our master bath a sprucing up with some new items. I set off to visit my local Lowe’s with my $250 budget to see what I could do.

I’ll admit, I looked longingly at the vanities Lowe’s offers! The prices are fantastic and there were quite a few I could picture in our bathroom. Our current vanity is 80 inches which means a special order in most cases and even Lowe’s great prices probably aren’t going to be able to do that for $250. I settled on sprucing up our bathroom with some new touches.

The older light fixture we had was beginning to act a bit strange. The last bulb was blinking on and off a lot and I finally realized it was the fixture after replacing the bulb four times. I headed over to the bath area to check out what was available. The employee there suggested I check out the lighting aisle for a few more possibilities. A FEW??? That was the understatement of the century! I love that you can essentially build your own fixture by picking a base and then choosing shades that best fit your style.

After staring at the selection for a good 30 minutes and texting my husband various options for his opinion, I decided on one that had caught my eye when I first started looking. I loved that shades are not the “typical” style you usually see.

I was sold. And I grabbed some LED bulbs for it as well. The incandescent not only use more electricity but they heat of the bathroom – not exactly what you want in the summer.

Next, I really needed to pick out new hardware. The handles we had on the vanity were a sort of aged looking brass and I really disliked them. I wanted a clean, brushed nickel look. I picked out handles, drawer pulls and new hinges. Lastly, I picked out a new faucet as the one we have is the builder’s model from the mid-90’s. Again, there were sooo many to choose from. I wound up finding one that was basic and sleek and fit into my budget. Yay!!

I consider myself somewhat handy and have done my fair share of home improvement projects on my own so I figured I could tackle hardware switch myself but would leave the light fixture to Jay.

Next, I recruited Jay to switch out the light fixture for me. Even before he put the shades up, I was already loving the new look. Once it was put together, I was thrilled.

I’m pretty excited about how updated my bathroom already looks and am looking forward to completing the look with a fresh coat of paint and the new faucet. With so many options at Lowe’s, I’m already thinking about how I might change up the mirror as well!

You did such an amazing job! It’s surprising how much you can change a room without breaking your bank. It doesn’t always have to be an episode on the DIY channel.

This post couldn’t have come at a better time for me and my wife. We’ve been talking about redoing our guest bathroom, but we haven’t pulled the trigger because we thought it would cost too much. Thanks for the great insight.
