Memorial Day is more than just the unofficial start to summer and a long weekend full of barbecues, brats and beer. It’s a chance to remember those who made a huge sacrifice for our country and out everything on the line to protect our freedoms.
Every day, 1,000 Word War II veterans die. Stars and Stripes Honor Flight, Inc flies WWII veterans and terminally ill veterans of other wars to see their memorials in Washington D.C. They provide the opportunity for the rest of us to say “thank you” to our veterans who are still among us. Time is running out – flights are scheduled for this fall, but money and donations are still needed to order to make these flights happen. Several restaurants in the area have stepped up to make donations through fundraisers going on now. I encourage you to visit these establishments and help make a difference. And personal donations and volunteers are always welcome and go a long way toward helping as well.
I’ll leave you with the trailer for the documentary that was made about the program. Please take a minute and watch the story through the eyes of our own veterans. And have a safe and happy Memorial Day!
