Mysterious Booms in Clintonville, Wisconsin – UPDATED AGAIN!

I love a good mystery – I always have.  When I was a kid, I used to spend hours peering out of my window at night just trying to catch a glimpse of Bigfoot or a UFO.  Things unknown always sparked my interest and imagination. It was exciting to think that, as much as we know about this world, there are still things that remain a total mystery.

Apparently, I still have this same tendency because I am completely fascinated with the story of what is happening in Clintonville, Wisconsin, a town about 40 miles west of Green Bay.  Over the last few nights, residents have reported strange “booms” occurring over and over in the middle of the night.  Reportedly, the noises are disturbing residents and pets, even waking them in the wee hours of the morning and prompting numerous calls to the police.

Residents have described the booms as sounding like distant explosions, a jackhammer, or thunder.  Local authorities have been at a loss to explain the noises.  They have checked water lines, sewers, and even consulted seismologists but no one seems to be able to point to a cause.

What do you think it could be??

Wednesday – While last night was reported to be a bit quieter, the booms did start up again during the early morning hours.  The town set up surveillance camera to try and gain more insight.  A new theory has emerged that the record-breaking warm temperatures (which came on somewhat suddenly – we’ve been in the 80’s the past few days) may be causing ice underground to break and make the noises.  That’s just a theory, so stay tuned to see if the mystery is solved in the next few days!

Friday – Officials made a statement yesterday that Clintonville actually experienced a small earthquake on Tuesday, and that is what is responsible for the booms.  I haven’t heard anyone go too in depth about it, but I’m curious as to why the booms last 72 hours and seemed to only happen at night.  Anyone from more earthquake-prone areas had this experience???

I have family that live in Clintonville. I should give them a call and see if they have heard this. I haven’t heard anything from them about this. I did see an article about this on one of the news stations though.

I’d be curious about their take on it since they are right there and can hear all of the town chatter. I’m half tempted to go up and camp out for tonight to see if I hear anything!

I too am fasinated about what is going on there & I live in Nevada! I have been online reading & watching news footage about it for the past several hours. Now I’m doing GOOGLE & BING searches to see what else is out there about this & I found your blog! I have no idea what it is after everything they have already ruled out….maybe something volcanic? All I know is that if I lived there, I’d leave! I’m scared for those people & their town!

I don’t know of any volcanoes in the Green Bay area, but I too thought it must be something seismic. I’ve heard that the shakes DID register on the scale, but were not caused by any ground shifting. I wonder if we’ll ever find out?

I know many people are saying it is something heavenly. I’m not saying that it isn’t – just that we have to rule out all scientific causes first.

Keep us posted. I’m not close enough to Clintonville to know much about this. It’s funny to read about it on FB 🙂
