How to Train Your Dragon Live Show Review – Milwaukee

We had the chance to see the How to Train Your Dragon Live Show in Milwaukee last night.  We had seen the movie as a family and also have the video game, so we are pretty familiar with the story and were wondering how on earth they could pull it off in a live show.

Let me just say, it was AMAZING!!! The show transformed the BMO Harris/Bradley Center (known mostly to LJ as the place where the Admirals play) into a mystical land where dragons roam, breathe fire, and vikings fear for their safety.

The production company invested in 20 high tech projectors (at the tune of $100K a piece!!) that project the scenery onto a carefully built wall at the back of the stage.  There are also interactive 3D pieces of scenery moving around as well as the stars of the show – the dragons.  The dragons move smoothly, breathe fire, and even have facial expressions.  All of this magic combines to create the effect of attending a movie where the characters are played by live actors.  You really have to see it to “get it”.

We had a blast with the VIP “Hero’s Welcome” experience.  We checked in and received some goody bags with all kinds of Dragon swag.

Next, we dressed up as Vikings and had our picture taken as we considered which town to pillage.

Then we had a chance to meet the human stars of the show, Astrid and Hiccup.  LJ even got a dragon training diploma!

After the show, we were treated to some behind the scenes secrets about what makes the show work and how the gorgeous dragons are created.

When the show is over, all the dragons are checked and put away safely.

Ben shows us the principles behind some of the magic!

How to Train Your Dragon is in Milwaukee until Sunday, so there is still time to grab your little dragon hunters and catch the show!! If you already have tickets, upgrade to the VIP experience here.

We were given tickets to the show and VIP experience in order for us to review it. All opinions expressed are our own.
