Eat Healthy Without Hitting the Grocery Store #SummerisSocial

hello freshI somehow pictured this whole working-from-home thing a little differently in my head than it is in real life. I imagined spending my work day in my very organized office (ha-ha!!) and padding down to the kitchen in my comfy slippers (at least that part is true) and whipping up a delicious home cooked meal for my family.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who found that being a WAHM is completely different from the picture you had in your head.

And during the summer, that picture is even more laughable. Here’s what a typical day looks like – drive Josh to whatever camp he has going on that day, run home and write whichever posts are due in the near future, drive back to camp and pick Josh up, spend some time playing basketball or doing something else with Josh since the whole reason I work from home is to be able to spend time with my kid, throw in a few loads of laundry, make lunch, eat lunch, clean up from lunch, get Josh set up with another activity that does NOT include video games, get some more work done, hear the door open and realize it is now 5 pm and I haven’t even thought of dinner. And then wind up going out to eat or ordering takeout because I also haven’t gone to the grocery store.

This summer things changed a bit. I had the chance to try out a new service called HelloFresh – they are the ones I am partnering with for this post and they are my new best friends (and not because they are paying me!).

HelloFresh came along at the perfect time. We had decided that eating out all the time was making our wallets too thin and out waistlines too thick. I wanted to begin eating more real, whole foods and stay away from the convenience processed foods that had wormed they way into our dinners to make things easier.

Oh my gosh – these shrimp tacos from @hellofresh were AMAZING!! #client #HelloFreshPics

HelloFresh is a delivery service that provides healthy and delicious recipes with pre-measured ingredients, right to your doorstep.

I had the chance to experience two box deliveries, each with three different meals (so a total of six meals altogether).  I LOVED not having to go to the grocery store. Seriously LOVED it!! See, I’m one of those shoppers that grocery stores love – I am an impulse shopper. I can walk in for a gallon of milk and walk out with a full shopping cart of items and $200 less than I walked in with. With HelloFresh, I got the exact ingredients I needed for each recipe and not anything else. Plus, the ingredients were already measured out so I didn’t wind up with an entire bottle of something when I only needed two tablespoons. Genius! When my boxes arrived, they were well chilled (which was a concern during some of the serious heat we were having) and the meat was separated from the rest of the ingredients even though it was vacuum packed and didn’t leak at all. The ingredients that went with each meal were bagged together so that there was no confusion about which item went with which meal. The recipes came in a little booklet and were super easy to follow – they even had pictures to help! Recipes are rated by difficulty from one to three and all were totally doable, even for me.

Tonight’s dinner (thanks to @hellofresh) is pork chops with pineapple relish, cheesy grits, and watercress. #yum #client

One of the things I love best about the HelloFresh meals are that they are all made from whole ingredients. There is no “adding the mix” or anything like that. Any sauces or extras (like the awesome tomatillo and avocado salsa I made) are made from the ingredients in the box. The ingredients are all fresher than what you would even find in your local grocery store – must be because HelloFresh supports local businesses when ever possible.

My picture does NOT do this dish justice but OMG was this amazing!! Lime chicken with a tomatillo and avocado salsa and charred corn. Thank you @hellofresh!!! #client #foodie

I always say that the true test of whether I truly love something is whether or not I will spend my own money on it once the campaign is over. With HelloFresh, I can say that I definitely will be continuing to order boxes from them going forward. While we tend to lean toward the classic boxes, I did have a chance to try one of the vegetarian meals and loved it.
