Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop: The Wildest Watch Release of the Year?

Swatch has done it again. And this time with a partner nobody saw coming. Together with Audemars Piguet, the brand has just unveiled the brand-new Royal Pop, a collection that transforms the legendary Royal Oak into something radically different: a colorful Bioceramic pocket watch inspired by the iconic Swatch POP models of the 1980s.

Beyond the Wrist — A Royal Oak Like Never Before

Instead of a “MoonSwatch-style” Royal Oak for the wrist, Swatch and AP have created a hybrid object that can be worn around the neck, clipped to a bag, carried in a pocket, or displayed as a desk clock. The concept draws from Pop Art and blends joyful boldness with fine watchmaking DNA.

Despite the radical format, the Royal Oak’s signature design is unmistakable: the octagonal bezel, the eight hexagonal screws, and AP’s iconic Petite Tapisserie dial texture are all present. Swatch has simply cranked up the colors and proportions to create something far more graphic and playful than Audemars Piguet has ever put its name on.

Eight Dials, Eight Languages, One Icon

The collection comprises eight models — each named in a different language, combining a color with the number eight as a nod to the Royal Oak’s octagonal bezel:

•  Otto Rosso — pink with a red bezel

•  Huit Blanc — white with multicolored screw accents

•  Green Eight — two contrasting shades of green

•  Blaue Acht — lime green and light blue, almost fully luminous

•  Orenji Hachi — deep navy blue with orange accents

•  Ocho Negro — striking monochrome black and white

•  Làn Ba — light blue and mid-blue tones

•  OTG ROZ — teal dial, bright yellow bezel, and pink accents

Six models feature the Lépine-style layout with the crown at 12 o’clock and a minimalist two-hand display. The remaining two — Làn Ba and OTG ROZ — adopt the Savonnette-style configuration with the crown at 3 o’clock and a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. All eight models are expected to be available on Chrono24 shortly after launch.

Serious Mechanics Behind the Pop Art Surface

Here’s where things get serious beneath the playful surface. Unlike the quartz-powered MoonSwatch, every Royal Pop runs on a new hand-wound version of Swatch’s SISTEM51 movement, featuring 15 active patents, over 90 hours of power reserve, anti-magnetic Nivachron balance springs co-developed with AP, and laser-adjusted precision. A sapphire caseback shows the movement, while an integrated visual power reserve indicator changes color from gray — time to wind — to gold when the mainspring is fully charged.

Under USD 400 — A Price That Shakes Up the Game

The confirmed retail price has caught many off guard. At USD 400, the Royal Pop sits well below expectations. Especially considering the mechanical movement, elaborate case construction, and Audemars Piguet branding. That combination of iconic design, limited availability, and approachable pricing virtually guarantees instant sell-outs.

The Watch World Is Divided — And That’s the Point

Reactions are polarized, exactly as intended. Some collectors celebrate the Royal Pop as a refreshing rejection of luxury-watch seriousness; others call it sacrilege. But even skeptics acknowledge that the collaboration is far more creatively ambitious than a simple Royal Oak reissue. The mechanical movement has earned particular respect among enthusiasts.

Whether the Royal Pop becomes a collectible icon or a cultural curiosity, Swatch and Audemars Piguet have already won: this is the one watch release nobody can stop discussing.
