What We Looked For When Considering a Second Home Abroad

At some point, without there being a single dramatic moment that marked the shift, the idea of having a second home abroad stopped being one of those vague, “maybe one day” thoughts.
And it turned into something much more real, the kind of thing that has you sitting at the kitchen table late at night with too many tabs open, comparing places you’ve never lived in but are suddenly trying to imagine as part of your everyday life.

A second home abroad.

Not in a dreamy, far-away, everything-will-be-perfect kind of way, but in a very practical, slightly overwhelming, and surprisingly layered way that makes you realize just how many things you have to consider when you’re not just choosing a place to visit, but a place that needs to fit into your actual life, with kids, schedules, responsibilities, and all the small details that don’t show up in glossy photos.

Because once the idea becomes real, the questions start stacking up quickly. Where would we actually go, not just for a week or two, but regularly? Would we use it enough to justify it, or would it slowly turn into something that sits there in the background, quietly costing money and attention?

And maybe most importantly, are we choosing this because it sounds good, or because it genuinely makes sense for how we live? We didn’t have all the answers, but we did start figuring out what mattered to us, and that changed everything.

It Started With a Feeling, But Didn’t Stay There

In the beginning, if I’m being honest, this wasn’t about spreadsheets or return on investment or long-term planning, it was about a feeling. The idea of having somewhere we could go that felt like ours, where mornings were slower, where the kids could be outside more, where we could step out of our usual routine without needing to plan every second of it, and where life just felt a little less… structured.

We started, like most people probably do, with Europe. Spain felt easy and familiar, Portugal had that relaxed coastal energy that is hard not to fall in love with, and parts of Italy had that charm that makes you immediately start imagining a completely different kind of life, one where everything somehow feels more intentional and less rushed.

But the more we looked, the more we realized that liking a place and being able to actually integrate it into your life are two very different things. Travel time, for example, quickly became a bigger factor than we expected, because what feels like a manageable journey once a year starts to feel very different when you imagine doing it multiple times with kids, luggage, and limited time windows.

Then there was the question of seasonality, because some of the places we loved most were incredible for a few months of the year and then noticeably quieter, sometimes even partially shut down, for the rest, which made us pause and ask whether we were choosing a place we could actually use consistently, or one that only worked in very specific conditions. And then, almost quietly, the financial side started to come into focus, not in a stressful way, but in a practical one. If we were going to do this, it couldn’t just be about how it felt. It had to make sense.

We Realized It Needed to Fit Into Our Life, Not Sit Outside It

At some point, the idea of a second home shifted from being an escape to being something that needed to integrate into our life in a way that felt natural, not forced. Because it’s easy to imagine a place you go to when everything else stops, but that’s not how real life works. We didn’t want something that required perfect timing, long stretches of availability, or complicated planning every time we wanted to use it.

We wanted something that worked for shorter stays, spontaneous trips, and the kind of visits that don’t require turning everything else off just to make them happen. And that meant being honest about how often we would realistically go, how easy it would be to get there, and whether it would still feel like a good decision after the initial excitement wore off. That’s when we started looking beyond the obvious choices.

Why Dubai Ended Up Making More Sense Than We Expected

Dubai properties weren’t on our original list.

In fact, if anything, we had assumptions about it that didn’t immediately align with what we thought we were looking for, which is probably why it took us a bit longer to seriously consider it. But once we did, it kept coming back into the conversation, not because it was the most romantic option, but because it was, in many ways, the most practical.

Accessibility was one of the first things that stood out, because when you’re thinking about a place you want to use regularly, not just occasionally, ease of travel becomes incredibly important, and Dubai is one of those places that is consistently well-connected, with frequent flights and relatively predictable travel logistics.

Then there was the infrastructure, which, in a way that is hard to fully appreciate until you compare it directly with other options, removes a lot of the friction that can come with owning property abroad.

Everything is designed to work. Property management services are well-established, processes are clear, and daily life, from getting around to managing basic needs, feels structured in a way that reduces the kind of small, ongoing stress that can turn something exciting into something complicated.

And then there’s the property market itself. Dubai has made it relatively straightforward for foreign buyers to purchase property, with clear frameworks, a wide range of developments, and a level of transparency that, compared to some other countries, feels more accessible. But what really shifted our perspective was the investment side of it. Because if you’re putting money into a second home, it helps if that decision holds up beyond just the lifestyle aspect.

Dubai properties, particularly in areas with consistent demand, offer the possibility of rental income, whether short-term or long-term, which means that instead of the property sitting unused for long periods, it can function in a way that supports itself, at least to some extent. That doesn’t make it a purely financial decision, and we didn’t treat it as one, but it does add a layer of practicality that is hard to ignore.

Balancing What Feels Good With What Actually Works

This was probably the most challenging part of the entire process, because the places that feel the most appealing at first are not always the ones that make the most sense long-term. It’s easy to imagine a beautiful apartment with a view, a neighborhood that feels completely different from home, and a version of life that feels slower and more intentional.

But then you start asking the questions that don’t show up in those initial images. Would the kids feel comfortable there, not just for a few days, but repeatedly? Is it a place that works outside of a holiday mindset, where normal routines still exist? How easy is it to maintain, manage, and step away from when you’re not there?

With Dubai, the conversation shifted slightly, because instead of just imagining what it would feel like, we started looking at how it would function. Which areas are more residential and family-friendly? What kind of building management is in place, and how much does it actually take off your plate? How easy is it to lock up and leave without worrying about what’s happening in your absence?

Because at the end of the day, the goal wasn’t to create another responsibility. It was to create something that fits into our life without adding unnecessary weight to it.

The Moment We Realized It Had to Make Sense Long-Term

There was a point in all of this where it became very clear that this wasn’t just about choosing a place we liked, it was about choosing something that would continue to make sense over time. Because a second home, especially one abroad, is not a short-term decision. If you don’t use it, if it doesn’t fit into your life naturally, it doesn’t just sit there, it becomes something you think about, something you manage, something that quietly takes up space in your mind.

And that’s not what we wanted. We wanted something that felt like an extension of our life, not an obligation. Which meant being realistic about how often we would go, what kind of space we actually need, and whether the location supports the kind of lifestyle we’re trying to create, not just the one we imagine.

It’s Less About the Property, More About Everything Around It

One thing that surprised me the most is how much less the actual property mattered compared to everything around it. Of course, layout, design, and size are important, but they are only part of the picture. What really determines whether something works is the environment around it. The ease of living. The accessibility.

The way it fits into your routine, not just your ideal scenario. Because you can have the most beautiful apartment, but if getting there is complicated, if managing it feels like a task, or if being there doesn’t feel as effortless as you expected, it changes the experience entirely. That’s why we kept coming back to places that felt simple in practice, not just appealing in theory.

We’re Still Figuring It Out, And That’s Okay

We didn’t rush into a decision. And I’m glad we didn’t. This kind of choice benefits from time, from sitting with it, from asking the same questions more than once and seeing if the answers change. We’re still looking, still comparing, still figuring out what feels right, but the difference now is that we’re approaching it with a clearer understanding of what actually matters. It’s no longer just about what looks good. It’s about what works.

Final Thoughts

Considering a second home abroad sounds exciting, and it is, but it’s also much more layered than it appears at first. It sits somewhere between lifestyle, practicality, and long-term planning, and finding the balance between those things is what makes the difference. For us, the process has been less about finding the perfect place and more about understanding what actually fits into our life in a way that feels sustainable, flexible, and real.

Dubai wasn’t the obvious choice in the beginning, but it became one of the most realistic ones once we looked at everything together, not just how it feels, but how it functions.

And maybe that’s the biggest takeaway.
