As much as I have been enjoying all the traveling I have been doing lately, in reality I am a bit of a homebody. I love being home with my comfy blanket, my slippers, and my favorite homemade meals.
For as long as I can remember, certain meals signified being home for me. When I was away at college and would come home for a break, my mom’s cooking was always a sure sign that I was back home. One of my favorite dishes was “Charlotte’s Lasagna” and even though I was never really sure who Charlotte actually was, the smell and taste of that lasagna made me feel like I was back home.
As the wife of a Marine Corps vet, I have a little bit of an idea of how homesick our military members can get while they are away from home. I know my husband has talked about how certain MREs even started to taste better because they reminded him of favorite family dinners. (MREs are “meals ready to eat”, come in foil packets, and IMO are pretty nasty. I’m thinking you’d have to be really homesick to think one tasted good.)
