So now that we have all been back at school for a little while the honeymoon phase is wearing off and you are probably getting a better picture of what challenges your student is going to face this year. I know that, when I was teaching elementary school, October was the month when I would start making phone calls letting parents know when their child might want to put in a little extra time to ensure a successful year.
A lot of times parents would ask what they could do to help their kids get some extra instruction and/or practice in the subjects they were struggling with. They usually had a pretty good idea on how to help with reading, but math was more of a struggle. I had a number of resources that I would recommend, but there certainly are a lot more available now!
One of the resources I would point parents to in order to help their students succeed in Math now would be Revolution Math.
Why am I such a fan of Revolution Math? Well, for a number of reasons actually. This online afterschool program is designed to support students in grades 2-5 and has some really unique features that set it apart from the rest.
First, the availability of live tutoring. There are a number of online math programs that allow your child to work through them on their own. If there is something the student doesn’t understand or needs to have it explained a different way, they are out of luck. With Revolution Math, there is the same live teacher available for each session which helps keep the kids engaged as well as answer any questions.
Also, the program matches students with small groups (squads) of 3 other students. I love that this gives kids a chance to see that they are not the only ones getting this extra practice! They get to practice working as a team and might even make a new friend or two. And compare this to some other tutoring programs that not only cost more, but also cram twenty or more kids into a class.
One of my favorite things about Revolution Math is their use of immersive, story-based curriculum. Rather than just put students through a series of math drills, the program allows students to choose their own character and then follow the character through a story which also includes common core aligned activities and games. As students earn “gems” they will be able to turn them in for awesome prizes. How fun!
And how convenient is Revolution Math since it is an online program! Most families don’t really have time to traipse off to yet another weekly activity. With Revolution Math, your child can be tutored anywhere they have access to their computer or tablet.
What do you get when you sign up for Revolution Math?
Every student receives a learning kit upon joining the program. Inside they will find materials that enhance the Revolution Math learning experience. Hands-on materials include things like dice, flash cards, character masks and even poster board plus much more. Parents can check on their child’s progress anytime online and will receive weekly video updates from their child’s teacher.
