This past weekend, my family and I had the chance to see Peter and the Starcatcher at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater thanks to the kind PR folks who set aside some tickets for us. I did not know a lot about the play going into it – just that it was a prequel to Peter Pan.
The play is based on a 2006 novel written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. It basically tells the story of how an abandoned orphan became Peter Pan, how he gained both the Lost Boys and the ability to fly and even how Tinkerbell entered the picture.
The play is campy and humorous. The characters are over the top funny and touching at the same time. The actors and actress (yes, it’s all men and one woman) are wildly talented and manage to make the audience believe that they are indeed sailing on a ship in the middle of the ocean or flying through the night sky with minimal props or special effects.
While the literature I received recommended the play for ages 8 and above, I would suggest that many of the jokes would go over the head of all but the most mature 8 year old. While parents do not have to worry about any inappropriate language or themes, this is definitely not geared toward young children who would probably find it hard to follow.
My family loved the play and thought the cast was of the caliber one would expect to see on Broadway. We laughed so hard our stomachs hurt and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I highly recommend seeing Peter and the Starcatcher at the Milwaukee Rep if you are able! It will be there through May 24th.
