This post is brought to you in sponsored partnership with Norton. I received compensation and a free Norton Core Wi-Fi Router in exchange for sharing my honest opinion
As a family, we have become completely dependent on WiFi. It kind of amazes me how quickly it has become such an important part of almost every aspect of our everyday lives. From using it to see who is at the front door, to answering emails on my laptop at the table while I’m eating breakfast, to streaming our favorite TV shows in the evening, we use WiFi so many different ways every single day. And we completely take for granted that it will be there when we want it to.
Many of us use the conventional router that we were given when we signed up with our ISP. There can be a few issues with this. First, are you being charged each month to use this router? If so, you might want to look into purchasing a router. You will probably be able to both save money and get better quality by purchasing your own.
Secondly, how secure is the router you are using? Most of us non-technical people (yes, I consider myself VERY untechnical despite making a living online!) probably don’t even know how to tell if our home network is secure. Luckily, the folks at Norton do know all about that stuff and have come out with a router that makes it really easy to set up a reliable and secure home network.
The router I am referring to (and the one I received to review) is the Norton Core. Being decidedly untechnical, my first thought was about how cool it looks! Seriously, it kind of reminds me of the big silver ball at Epcot. But it turns out that its spherical shape does more than just look cool. The round shape helps it improve the WiFi signal, by broadcasting it in multiple directions, unlike many routers that rely on an antenna pointed in a specific direction. So already I’m thinking this is pretty cool.
But as I learned more about the router, I managed to get past how cool it looks and appreciate the level of security it offers. My non-technical way of understanding it is this – not only does the Norton Core broadcast a WiFi signal to all of your devices, it can also detect whether they are at risk. If one of your devices has a known or suspected vulnerability Norton Core isolates that device so that it cannot put the rest of your connected devices at risk. Stop and think about that for a minute. Yeah – pretty cool!
Core also helps protects your IoT devices from being exploited and allowing hackers to gain entrance to your home network. (IoT devices refer to your “Internet of Things” devices like smart thermostats, internet connected security systems and cameras).
Core can be used to provide a filter and parental controls for the younger members of your household as well. No need to purchase a separate system or subscription to monitor where your kids are going online. Core can be configured to keep them off of the sites that aren’t appropriate.
The Norton Core WiFi Router comes with one year’s subscription to Norton Core Security Plus, which provides the security protection for your connected devices. Once your complimentary year is up, the router will still give you outstanding WiFi performance but you will need to renew the Norton subscription to maintain the security protection and parental controls.
