When I was in fifth grade, I got my very first babysitting job. It was actually more of a “mother’s helper” type job and it was helping out a family in our neighborhood with their two kids while the mom waited for the arrival of their third. The two boys, Ryan and Kevin, were three and eighteen months and were the cutest little boys ever. You might have thought they would be a handful, but there were such great kids, it was the perfect introduction to babysitting I could have asked for. The mom, Kathy, really just needed another set of hands around the house and someone to watch them while she indulged in such luxuries as taking a shower.
Before long, the third little boy (Brendan) arrived and I continued to babysit and help out. Kathy had been a teacher but was now a stay at home mom to her three boys and their house was such a fun place to be – always full of singing and laughter. Before long, they moved to a larger house in the same town and I continued to help out. One day I arrived to find their dining room table covered with various make up, skin care, and bath products and was more than a little curious about what was going on.
Kathy shared that she had started selling Avon. It was the perfect venture of the busy mom of three boys as she could pretty much make her own schedule and work when the boys were napping or with me. She loved that the business really did not require a lot of work since everyone knew the Avon name (they have been a leader in their industry for over 125 years!) and once they found out she was selling it, they pretty much came to her. She didn’t have to throw parties or anything that would take her away from her family. The added income was a huge help with their new house as well!
I began trying some of the products and fell in love with a number of them myself. A few years later, I moved to New Hampshire and discovered the horrible black flies that are everywhere in May and June. Wouldn’t you know it, Avon’s Skin So Soft was the best way to keep them from biting and I quickly found myself an Avon Independent Sales Rep in my area up there.
It seems like every school I have taught in has had at least one teacher who is also selling Avon. I guess it makes perfect sense since it is a great way to supplement a teacher’s salary without taking too much time away from the class. The average Avon Independent Sales Rep earns 30-35% on their personal sales (and there’s an opportunity to earn even more with higher sales volumes). Some of my teacher friends even spent their summer vacations on trips they earned through the Avon sales they made during the school year. And these folks did amazing well, even though they had absolutely no background in marketing or sales. Avon has smart sales tools to support those who sign on including one-on-one guidance from another experienced Avon seller as soon as you become a rep, your own eStore that you create and personalize to start selling right away and brochures, product samples and exciting launches to keep your customers excited.
