Until you have a dog, you really can’t understand how much they become a member of the family. Pet Month is all about honoring that relationship. When we adopted Roofus from the shelter, he immediately fit into our family and showed us he has personality that goes on for DAYS. Keeping him happy and healthy is just as important as it is for any other member of the family. And just like with any of us, there are a number of things we can do to help keep him feeling his best. While we do those things every day, we love taking a little extra time with him during Pet Month and appreciating all that he has brought to our lives.
First, we had to learn his “language”. Roofus makes lots of sounds. When he first came home to us, it was a little like taking care of someone else’s infant when you don’t know what all of their individual cries mean. Roofus has one bark when he hears something outside and another when he wants to go out. He makes a funny Chewbacca noise when he is jealous that you are eating something he wants. And like most dogs, a wagging tail means he is happy!
(And if saving money makes YOUR tail wag, be sure to check out the mPerks offer on Nature’s Recipe dog food at Meijer. You can save 15% off any Nature’s Recipe dog food from 5/6 – 6/2.) Next, we spent some time seeing what he likes to do. Turns out that he is a big napper. When he is active, he is REALLY active but then he crashes and naps. He loves going on walks and sniffing everything. He loves toys but they have to be plush and with a squeaker inside. He can pretty much get that squeaker out in 5 minutes or less.
He hates taking a bath and loud noises. Fireworks freak him out but thunder doesn’t bother him a bit. His crate is his “safe place” and he goes there if he is scared or not feeling well. Last, we had to work to find what food and treats he both liked and agreed with him. When he came home from the shelter, they gave us a bag of dog food to take with us. Right away we noticed that it was not agreeing with him at all. He was throwing up a few times a week and I started doing a little research. I learned that many dogs do not do well with grain in their food. We switched him to a grain-free food and his problems stopped. If you are looking for a good quality, grain free dog food consider giving Nature’s Recipe a try. There are a number of things that make me feel good about feeding Nature’s Recipe to Roofus (and keep that tail going full speed). We love that it is made with real fish or meat as the first ingredient. This makes it easy to digest, especially since it doesn’t contain any corn, wheat or soy protein – all things that have bothered Roofus in the past. Since it is all natural and contains active nutrients and antioxidants and NO artificial flavors or preservatives, we feel good about giving to Roofus during Pet Month and every day!
It used to only be available in speciality pet stores but is now available at a variety of stores nationwide including Meijer. And like I mentioned, you can save 15% off any Nature’s Recipe dog food from 5/6/18 – 6/2/18. Time to stock up and make sure that tail keeps wagging!! And if you haven’t been in the pet section of your local Meijer in a while, you are in for a pleasant surprise! Meijer has redone their pet sections and they look fab-u-lous! Go check out the one close to you.
