Nothing can take the fun out of a vacation like getting sick. The combination of being off of your regular schedule, being on the go and probably not getting as much sleep puts you in a prime position for getting sick. There are several things you can do to help you and your family stay healthy while traveling.
Wear an n95 mask on airplanes where the air is recycled. You will be breathing the same air as everyone else and odds are at least a few of the people on your plane are ill. A mask will help filter out bacteria and viruses and keep you healthy. They are also great for dealing with unpleasant odors during your plane ride. Got a teen who thinks wearing a mask is totally uncool? This is a fun, colorful option that even your teen will be willing to wear.
Wash your hands often while traveling. The large number of people that go through bigger terminals, major attractions, and popular restaurants put you in contact with a lot of germs. The more often you wash your hands, the less chance these germs will work their way into your body. Absolutely can’t get to a sink? Try portable hand wipes. These are my favorite as they are infused with essential oils and come in grapefruit, lavender and peppermint.
Avoid touching your face while traveling. Germs enter our bodies through our eyes, nose and mouth. To prevent germs from entering your body, you want to avoid transferring them to your face where they can infect you. If you have a habit of touching your face or rubbing your eyes, this may be a hard habit to break but it is well worth getting it in check before you travel.
Carry hand sanitizer with you while you travel. While some germs are good for us, a large number of germs you come into contact with are not. Even washing your hands only goes so far when you find yourself in a restroom with no soap and when you have to touch door handles and other common germ locations before eating. Hand sanitizer is not a replacement for washing with soap, but it is a good compliment to it. And in a pinch, hand sanitizer is better than nothing!
Start boosting your immune system before you travel and keep up the routine while you are out. Elderberry capsules or gummies and vitamin C are both great options for helping your body fend off illness. Opt for capsules or gummies over syrups so you can safely travel without worrying about liquid restrictions.
These are just a few tips to help you stay healthy while traveling. Hopefully you will enjoy your trip and not need to seek any medical attention on the road so that you can thoroughly enjoy your trip!
