When I was a kid, I used to go visit my grandparents during the holidays. My grandparents were great at making my visits absolutely magical. Regular rules did not apply at their house. They let me have root beer when the rule at home was no soda. Bedtime was just a wee bit later. We watched “Day of Our Lives” in the afternoon and ate Double Stuffed Oreos. And my favorite thing was when we went to Friendly’s and got Peppermint Stick Sundaes.
For those of you not on the East Coast, Friendly’s was (and still is, I believe) a very popular restaurant that was known for their ice cream. It was always our go to place after the school play or band concert and the Peppermint Stick Sundae was my very favorite! By the time I got married and moved to the Midwest, both my grandparents had passed away but I still thought of them every time I ate at Friendly’s and had my favorite Peppermint Stick Sundae.
I was so sad when I realized that Friendly’s doesn’t have any locations in the Midwest and even sadder when I couldn’t find any peppermint stick flavored ice cream anywhere nearby. Imagine my surprise when Christmas rolled around and I wandered down the ice cream isle at my local grocery store and spotted Kemps Candy Cane Ice Cream staring at me from the end cap. I rubbed my eyes and did a double take. Yep – that was my beloved Peppermint Stick disguised with a different name. Turns out that Kemps has a similar ice cream to the one I fell in love with as a kid and it’s only available for a limited time.
You’d better believe I bought a bunch of it up and set about recreating my favorite sundae – which tasted just as good as I remembered!
Simply take Kemps Candy Cane Ice Cream and scoop into a dish. Pour your favorite hot fudge over the ice cream and top with whipped cream. Sprinkle crushed candy canes on the top and you now have my favorite sundae ever!
Another holiday favorite is Eggnog Coffee. I love eggnog (and always have) but it just a little too rich for me to drink straight. Adding it to my coffee (instead of creamer) is my favorite way to enjoy it without overindulging. (A certain coffee chain even copied me and serves an eggnog latte during the holidays. Okay…maybe they didn’t copy me, whatever.)
If you have never tried Eggnog Coffee, I highly recommend it. It’s super easy to make!
Just brew your favorite coffee, like you do every morning. Add Kemps Golden Eggnog until the coffee reaches the color you usually drink it – if you like it light, add more. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle a little nutmeg on top. Viola – it’s a holiday in a cup!!
