When we first adopted Roofus from the shelter, we knew we had a LOT to learn about being good dog owners. We learned about the kind of nutrition he needed and made sure to give him lots of walks. We learned how to bath him and care for his fur. The one thing no one ever mentioned to us was the need to learn about dog dental care. It wasn’t until his second vet visit that the subject of dog dental care even came up!
Now, our family takes our own dental care pretty seriously, so you can imagine how badly we felt when we learned that we were supposed to be caring for our dog’s teeth as well. Since Roofus is a fairly small breed dog (about 15 lbs) he is added risk for dental issues. Once we learned this, we started watching for signs that might indicate that his dog dental care was lacking. These signs can include: bad breath, excess tartar build up on the teeth, and receding gums. We promptly bought a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste.
Please note: it is important to use a toothpaste that is specifically formulated for dogs. Since they cannot spit, human toothpaste could be toxic for them.
Unfortunately, Roofus does not like having his teeth brushed. Actually, that might be a bit of an understatement – he hates it. He has a number of tactics he uses to try an avoid it – everything from “disappearing” when he hears me getting the toothpaste out to actually growling at the toothbrush.
Our vet recommended giving him a treat that he loves after brushing his teeth to help make it a positive experience. Luckily, one of his favorite treats also happens to support good dental hygiene as well – Milk-Bone Advanced Care Brushing Dental Chews!
Instead of growling at them, he sits and begs for them!
And lucky for us, our local Meijer has a huge selection of Milk-Bone products all at a great price (and with an added savings offer right now) to choose from. If you purchase select Milk-Bone products at Meijer, you can take advantage of their MPerks offer of $1 off an Milk-Bone Advanced Care products for up to $3 off total savings through April 28th.
Since Roofus hates taking pills almost as much as getting his teeth brushed, we stocked up on Milk-Bone Advanced Care Line of Pill Pouches as well. Apparently medicine is a lot more fun to taste when it tastes like hickory smoked bacon!
