Most of the posts this time of year are all about gift ideas for other people. Not that I’m saying there is anything wrong with that – the holidays are supposed to be all about giving! But every once in a while, it’s important to take some time and give to yourself. As a busy business owner, wife and mom, I find that if don’t consciously schedule time for myself, I don’t get any. And part of that is giving a few gifts to myself – especially ones that will support my goals and dreams for 2019. I’ve put together a list of things that make great gifts to yourself. (This list is a combination of items that were gifted to me for review and ones that I bought myself. I loved some of them so much that I signed on to be an affiliate for them.)
I spend a lot of time in front of the camera both for video and photos. One thing I noticed right away is that when I feel confident, it shows through in the photos and videos. Therefore, I see anything that helps build my confidence as an investment in myself. The first three items especially fall into that category – they are things that might feel a little self-indulgent at first but really do help me feel more confident.
I used to have my teeth whitened professionally pretty regularly. But once I started working for myself, I was less willing to actually take the time to go to the dentist’s office and have it done. There was always something “more pressing” that the time would be better used for. I love that Smile Brilliant is professional grade whitening that can be done at home. They send a kit where you can take impressions of your teeth just like they do at the dentist’s office. You will send those into a professional lab (postage included inthe kit) and they will build you upper and lower trays customized to your specific teeth. And I love that they send extra impression material just in case you mess up the first one like I did. You then use those trays with the dentist-strength whitening gel at home – at your own convenience. They have different strengths of gel depending on if you have heavy staining, sensitive teeth or any other issues.
Smile Brilliant is giving away a $149 Smile Brilliant credit. It’s open to USA, UK, Australia and Canadian residents (yay!!) They are hosting the giveaway over on their site, so head over and enter ASAP!
Over the last year, I’ve noticed that my hair is beginning to thin. (And yes, I did see my doctor about this first and we are working to get my thyroid levels back to where they should be.) In order to support my hair growth and strength, I’ve started using SeroVital’s Hair Regeneres. It promises to “significantly reverse graying, restore hair volume, revitalize the scalp and strengthen hair.
It has a two step system that nourishes your hair from the inside AND out. The serum is applied to the scalp at night and the softgels are taken with food in the morning. The softgels don’t contain and weird chemicals – just ingredients like B vitamins, rosemary and turmeric to name a few. I was a bit leery of the big promises it was making but it has very positive reviews so why not give it a try, right?
There’s nothing like the colder weather to get me thinking about heading somewhere tropical and sandy. But when the thought of putting on a bathing suit makes me cringe, I start thinking about ways to get a handle on my eating and nutrition. There are lots of choices out there – have premade meals delivered, join a weight management group, drink only shakes for months, cut out specific foods – what’s a girl to do? Noom is an online weight loss program that promises to show you how to “stop dieting and lose the weight for good”. Noom does this by not just focusing on the calories in and out, but by providing education and psychological support as well. And you do all of it in the privacy of your own phone.
You receive your own Noom coach and they cheer you on as you complete the different assigned tasks and make progress. You go through a questionnaire process right at the beginning and are then matched with a coach who fits your specific needs and personality. I’m less than a week in but I am loving having everything in ONE app – food tracking, reminders, everything.
You can sign up for a trial before making the commitment to join.
I can often get so wrapped up with what I’m doing that I forget things I need to do. For those times, I utilize technology and reminders to help keep me on track. One of the things that really helps me is the Memo Box Mini. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and reminds you when it is time to take your medicine, vitamin or whatever. Are you concerned whether a loved one is taking their medication regularly? There is a family tracker function you can use to virtually “keep an eye” on a parent or kid away at college and make sure they are taking their medication when they should!
I always try to make sure that I am consuming enough water daily. It’s so important for my health and feeling my best, but it’s easy to lose track of how much I have actually consumed once I get working so I finally bought myself a bottle that reminds me how much I should be drinking each hour. If I see I’m falling behind, I can chug a little extra before it becomes too much! There are a variety of different sizes, styles and colors so you can find one that fits your style perfectly!
And to make sure the water I’m drinking is free of anything nasty and that it tastes AMAZING, I finally invested in an under the sink reverse osmosis water filter that adds minerals back into the water once it’s been filtered.
Having clean air is essential for feeling good and being healthy. I’ve reviewed a number of air purifiers over the years and I love having a fresh, clean smelling house, even after cooking something stinky like bacon. But I don’t love having to deal with replacing filters. The EdenPURE oxileaf purifier works a little differently. It sends ozone and negative ions into the air and provides fresh, pure and invigorating air. It is super quiet and still manages to remove 99% of pollutants, be baby and pet friendly, and kill germs, mold and allergens. The oxileaf is portable enough that you can easily use it in smaller spaces like cars, RVs, tents – anywhere you have a USB plug or can run an extension cord!
I’m pretty in love with ours and want to grab a few more so I can have them running in all of our bathrooms and bedrooms!
I’ve decided that 2019 is the year that I bring my photography skills to the next level. I do okay with food pictures that I can style and try different things with, but getting pictures of people while they are in action is something I want to work on. Snap Happy Mom has created three sets of cards that are chock full of tips and tricks to make sure you get every shot, every time. They are the size of playing cards and come already loaded on a key ring so you can always have them with you. She has decks for DSLR, smartphones (yes, both iPhones and Androids) and even a deck specifically for moms that covers composition, lighting and how to get your kids to work with you! She was nice enough to offer Wisconsin Mommy readers $5 off any order – just use the coupon code “wisconsin”. Plus, if you add multiple decks to your card, the price of each drops by $5 automatically.
