People spend hundreds of dollars each month purchasing products to put on their skin to make it look better. I admit that I have fallen victim to trying some pretty expensive creams and other products in the search for good looking skin. For me, in the end it all comes down to some pretty basic steps and they don’t cost much at all!

Stay hydrated
One winter, my skin was particularly dry and my face felt like it was two sizes too small. I bought every facial moisturizer in the cosmetics section of the drug store and even had humidifiers going in all the rooms in my house. Nothing seemed to help and I was ready to give up until I realized I probably wasn’t drinking nearly enough water. I upped my water intake and almost immediately saw an improvement. This was probably my big ah-ha moment that what I put into my body affects my skin more than what I put on it.
Get enough sleep
I look back at pictures when Josh was an infant and I can’t get over how old I look. Fast forward to when he was two, and suddenly I am looking more like myself. This alone is a huge indication of how much sleep can contribute to looking our best. There’s lots of science behind how sleep affects our hormones and overall well being but nothing illustrates that like pictures from those early sleep deprived days.
Remove makeup at night
It can be tempting to just roll into bed when you are really tired. I’ve often fought that little voice that asks “What difference will it make if you wait and take it off in the morning?” But it really does make a difference. Your skin repairs itself at night while you are sleeping, and having pore-clogging makeup on can interfere with that process. It also leaves you more prone to breakouts which do nothing to improve the look of your skin!
Use sunscreen
When I say “use sunscreen”, I don’t just mean when you go to the beach. Use sunscreen every day – even in the winter, even when it’s cloudy, even when you don’t think you will be going outside. Just put it on in the morning as part of your routine. Photoaging is caused by UVA rays and breaks down the skin’s ability to hold it’s shape, resulting in sagging and wrinkles.
Feed your body well
When looking to support your skin from the inside, a nutritious diet full of a variety of healthy foods is always best. This is probably the area where I struggle the most (just slightly above the whole “get enough sleep” thing!) and I know many busy moms are in the same boat. I depend on healthy supplements to help pick up some of the slack from my less than stellar eating days. I’ve talked before about how much I love Nature Made® supplements and have added a new one to my routine to help support my skin – Glow by Naure Made®!
