Top 10 eBay Holiday Gifts – 2012 edition

Since I am a person who hates crowds, standing in line and greatly values my personal space, I took a pass on all of the Black Friday (and Black Thanksgiving???) chaos this year.  I spent Thursday night home on the couch, went to bed early and slept in on Friday morning.  Now that’s my idea of a holiday!!

I love the holiday season, but pretty much detest holiday shopping.  Or at least I always did until I discovered shopping online.  I love being able to browse and shop all from the comfort of my own home.  I don’t have to go out into the cold or deal with any crowds, I just click away on my laptop or iPad (or even my phone!) using the mobile app.

I have a number of favorite stores I frequent online, but the one that probably gets the most action from this house is eBay!  You can literally find something for every single person on your list there.  And don’t think that I am giving out someone else’s creepy used items – oh no!! There are TONS of brand-spanking-new, still-in-the-box items available. (And eBay is open 24/7, so I can shop at all hours…)

1) How about a new Starbucks Verismo coffee maker so all of the coffee-lovers can get their fix without leaving the house? (I wouldn’t mind this showing up in my stocking!)

 2) I know LJ is hoping to find a Skylander’s Giants Starter Pack for Wii under the tree this year.

3) Our huge Star Wars fan would love the Star Wars Complete Saga for Wii as well!

4) Wisconsin Doggy is hoping a Wireless Fence shows up under the tree so he can go romping in the yard off of his leash.

5) I know mom would love a Ninja Multicooker to make dinner easy-peasy AND healthy.

6) Any fashionista would love a pair of UGG boots to keep her tootsies warm this winter.

7) Our resident bookworm would be all charged up about receiving a Kindle Fire in her stocking.

8) What blogger wouldn’t LOVE to have a giant computer monitor to work on???

9) Got a shutterbug in the family?  I’ll bet she would love a classy camera bag like this Kelly Moore beauty!

10) And me?  I’d be so excited to find a shiny, red sports car parked under my Christmas tree!! What do you say, Santa????

Yep – I would say eBay has got you covered no matter WHO you are shopping for!!

I am Thankful for YOU!! Amazon Gift Card #Giveaway

This time of year, everyone stops and thinks about what they are thankful for.  I certainly have a long list of things to be grateful for, and one of the biggest is YOU.  I am so humbled that you stop by regularly and share a little slice of my life, that you comment and cheer when things go well and offer comforting words when they don’t.

Several of my bloggy friends and I decided to get together and run a Thank You Giveaway for our readers.  We all pitched in a got a $150 Amazon Gift Card to be given away Sunday night – just in time for Cyber Monday!!!

So thanks for being a Wisconsin Mommy reader and good luck!!!

Unless you live in a cave without TV, radio, and a cell phone, you know all about the Packers/ Seahawks game on Monday night and the botched call heard round the world.  I get it, I really do.  It stinks when you try your best, do the right thing, and get penalized for it anyway.

It’s not fair.  It’s about 180 degrees from fair.  And we got to hear all about how unfair it was from anyone who had any kind of a public forum – everyone from radio and tv hosts to average folks with Twitter and Facebook accounts were talking about it.  Heck, they’re STILL talking about it.

But what no one has been talking about is the life lesson that could have been taught to the young people watching.  See, I have an eight year old son who is figuring out the very important lesson that sometimes life isn’t fair.  It’s a lesson that is not a lot of fun to learn. In fact it pretty much sucks.  But it is my job as his parent to help him navigate through learning this lesson and also help him decide how he is going to react to it.

See, this is a lesson that doesn’t ever really go away.  there will be all kinds of situations in life where things aren’t fair and you don’t get what you deserve.  Whether you apply for a job and don’t get it because someone else less qualified has the “right connections” or you buy a product and it stops working right after the warranty expires or the company you work for has a dip in sales and has to lay off people, you are going to face times when life just isn’t fair and you have no control over it.

So here’s the part I have been trying to teach my kid – you may have no control over the unfair thing that happens to you, but you do have control over how you react to it.

Let me say that again, just for emphasis: You do have control over how you react to it.

Unfortunately, several of the Packers felt that it was appropriate to voice their displeasure at the call that was made, either in person or via social media, using rather inappropriate language.

Elmer’s Bag It Forward #BagItForward #CBias

Every year I whine and complain that the back to school stuff gets put out too early.  If you follow me on Facebook, you probably saw my online hissy fit last year when one of my local stores put the back to school stuff out before the Fourth of July. (I know, right?)

So it was a bit ironic when I found myself stalking my local Wal*Mart this week, waiting impatiently for them to unpack the back to school boxes and put the supplies on the shelves.

Was it because I’d had enough of summer and was hoping that school was ready to start up again?  Nope.   Was it because I couldn’t wait any longer for all the fun things Fall has to offer – fresh apples, pretty leaves, and cooler days?  Nope.

It was because I was anxious to participate in the Bag It Forward program again this year!

Bag It Forward is probably one of my favorite things about Fall.  I’ve participated for the last two years and it have donated school supplies to both a community in need after a tornado leveled many of its homes and a well deserving teacher who could use a few extra supplies for her classroom.

This year we were excited to have the chance to put together a back to school supply kit for a local student in need.

We headed to our local Wal*Mart.

First we found the display that has all of the school supply lists. It also has a QR code you can scan to download the Elmer’s 1st Day app. It’s a cute app that lets you shoot, organize, and share pictures and memories from the first day of school.  Not only can you enhance photos with cute borders and decorations, it ensures that your photos are safe from accident deletion AND lets you control who sees them.  And, for every photo uploaded via the app, Elmer’s will donate one product to the Kids In Need Foundation (KINF) up to 200,000 products!  Too anxious to wait to download it?  Grab it here and start giving back by uploading photos of your back to school prep!

We then started shopping for the items on LJ’s second grade list. We grabbed two of everything – one for LJ and one to donate to another second grader who might need them.

We loved how the most popular items were located in the middle of the section in these handy bins.  It made our trip go much faster than if we had to hunt everything down in each aisle.

LJ’s school prefers Elmer’s glue products as they work better and last longer.  With prices like these, there’s no excuse not to get the good stuff!!

When we checked out, we were amazed that we were able to get all the supplies for less than $25 per student. Wow!!

All packed up and ready to be brought to our Elementary school on Monday morning!!  A big thank you to Elmer’s for allowing me to help out another 2nd grade student at LJ’s school!!

Target’s Big Honkin’ Summer Activites – Fun and Affordable!!

Despite the fact that June went by in the blink of an eye, we are hitting that point in summer where I start to hear those three dreaded words.

Mom, I’m bored.

Luckily, Target knows that kids need to keep busy during the summer and parents don’t want to spend a fortune keeping them entertained.  In fact, Target has a whole slew of things that can keep your small person busy and engaged for the rest of the summer! (And they are reasonably priced.)

Target sent a few things my way to try out with Mr. Bored.  We were really excited as we opened the box and found all kinds of goodies inside:

These badminton and golf sets will be great for burning off energy in the backyard once it cools down a bit.  I love that there is no set up needed, so LJ and his friends can head outside and use them without needing any assistance from me.

Our absolute favorite items were the ones you can use to set up a lemonade stand.  I am a HUGE fan of lemonade stands – I think they are a great learning experience for kids: you’ve got the whole concept of start up costs, profit (and loss), making change, using fractions and measurements.  Plus I love how it appeals to LJ’s entrepreneurial spirit.  Unfortunately, it’s been waaaaay too hot to set up a stand. I’m pretty sure my neighbors would call CPS if I sent my kid out to stand in 105 degree heat to sell lemonade!  We are looking forward to my in-laws’ annual rummage sale to set up a stand though.

Thank goodness Target realizes that not all summer days can be spent outside. Whether it’s too hot or possibly rainy (I hear it does actually rain sometimes during the summer – not that you would know that from this year so far) you need to have some inside activities planned as well.

This book making set is really cool because the blank books allow for all kinds of creativity and the included papers make creating a unique scene super easy.  Plus, I love the way it reinforces those language skills that might be ignored during the summer months.

Our favorite indoor activity was definitely making a duct tape wallet.  Duct tape comes in such cool colors and designs now and we had a blast making our own creation!

Find items from Target’s Big Honkin’ Summer collection in their kids’catalog. Learn more and connect with Target on their Facebook page or at Target.com.
